A DAY IN THE SPRINGS WITH A BABY & DOGS
Anyone else love day trips? As much as I love overnight travel, there’s something so nice about exploring a new place all day and then being home in time to sleep in your own bed.
Colorado Springs (along with Manitou Springs) is the perfect distance away from Denver for a low key day trip. At just an hour drive (from our part of town, at least), there’s no pressure to get on the road early. You can roll out of bed at a reasonable hour and hit the road at your leisure.
We’ve made this trek multiple times now, so I figured I would share an itinerary for a baby friendly, dog friendly day in the Springs.
First Stop
Start the day with a hike! Garden of the Gods is the obvious, but very popular choice. Last time we visited, we followed the Gateway and Susan G. Bretag Trail from the visitor center. This 2.9 mile trail was great for a couple reasons -it left from the visitor center (yay for bathrooms!), it was short enough and easy enough that we weren’t sweaty messes when we went into town afterwards, and it provided both close up and far away views of the rock formations - which are pretty neat!
If you are looking for a slightly less busy option, check out Red Rock Canyon Open Space, which is essentially across the street from Garden of the Gods. We have hiked the 1.8 mile Contemplative Trail to Sand Canyon Trail Loop and enjoyed it quite a bit.
Both parks are dog friendly but very busy and dogs must remain on leash (Red Rock Canyon does have a dog park, but we’re not dog park people).
Second Stop
After your hike, head over to Manitou Springs. Just a few minutes away from Garden of the Gods, this small town is a fun spot to walk around. It’s a bit of tourist trap, but here are two places that are worth visiting -
Red Dog Coffee - This dog friendly café has coffee, sweets, gift items, and more.
Rocky Mountain Beignets - Does this one really need an explanation? Highly recommend the beignet bites (less messy than full size). Sit a while on the patio with your pups while you enjoy your treat!
Third Stop
The Broadmoor Hotel may or may not be in your price range (it’s definitely not in ours!), but the lobby and grounds are open to the public. And since it’s a dog friendly hotel, you don’t have to leave your pups in the car! You might feel a little underdressed if you roll up in hiking clothes, but alas, the ultra rich also hike on vacation, right? Make sure to check out the cafe adjacent to the lobby and walk around the lake.
Final Stop
After a long day of activities, you’re likely going to be hungry! Finish you day at Lost Friend Brewing Company. This dog friendly brewery has a regular rotation of food trucks. Grab some dinner, a brew, and enjoy the good vibes!
